MODE – S AND ADS-B

Mode A and C transponders are now being replaced by Mode S transponders, this technology is optimised for tomorrow’s airspace requirements. The introduction of ADS-B surveillance technology means the modern transponder has now become the hub of future airspace compliance requirements. Here the TT31 remains the class leader, it was the world’s first transponder certified to TSO-C166b. This is latest FAA standard for the U.S. 2020 ADS-B mandate and demonstrates Trig’s advanced levels of compliance. It’s worth remembering that to receive all ADS-B In traffic transmissions in the U.S. the FAA requires a functioning certified ADS-B Out device.

PRODUCT DESIGN

The TT31 uses half the electrical power of legacy transponders, whilst still transmitting at a higher signal power, its efficient design reduces waste heat in the avionics stack. This reduces the load on the aircraft electrical system improving overall reliability. The flexible power input means that both 14 and 28 volt systems can be used without special configuration or dropper resistors (we recommend that any dropper resistor fitted for a previous transponder should always be removed). The TT31 is compatible with both parallel and serial altitude encoders; it can even act as a serial altitude repeater to provide a convenient altitude source for your GPS.

ADS-B EXPRESS LANE

In 2020 North America ADS-B will be required by most pilots.

The TT31 transponder is a class leader as it provides a highly practical 2020 ADS-B upgrade option. With the right avionics in your aircraft and our latest TT31 software you can get ADS-B installed up to three times faster than alternative solutions – saving time and money.

POWER OUTPUT AND ADS-B

Trig’s TT21 has a 130 watts nominal power output, making it a class 2 transponder that meets international standards for 1090ES ADS-B Out (TSO C166b). The TT21 is ideal for use in flight where a light weight Mode S solution is required and is suitable for both IFR and VFR use.

COMPATIBLE TRIG PRODUCTS

ADS-B enhances safety and visibility – your investment in a TT22 transponder is future proof. Trig has a matching certified GPS position source that is highly affordable called the TN72. This is ideal for ADS-B voluntary equipage and the TN72 can even be used to meet the 2020 mandate by light-sport, experimental and homebuilt types in the U.S.

Our TN70 GPS position source is suitable for certified Part 23 aircraft that need a TSO-C145 position source, for operations in 2020 rule ADS-B airspace using a TT22 transponder.

Customers in the U.S. should be aware that FAA, Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) 91.227 requires that a compliant ADS-B Out solution uses a Class 1 transponder. The TT22 is a Class 1 device and meets this requirement. The TT21 is a Class 2 device and does not meet this regulation.

Control of the radio via an EFIS display is also possible using industry standard SL40 and GTR225 protocols. This unique capability integrates your Trig radio with other avionics and provides real user flexibility.

PRODUCT DESIGN

The innovative use of a control head and separate radio hardware unit provides more installation options, especially when space is at a premium. The control head can be conveniently mounted in a full 57mm (2 ¼”) round hole or even smaller compact mount. Fitting is straightforward, and once installed the depth of the radio control head is only 74mm (3”). In practice this means that the Trig compact control head can be located in an aircraft instrument panel where a ‘single box’ radio will simply not fit. The compact radio is the perfect comms partner to our compact transponder Mode S (1090 ES ADS-B Out transponders).

PUSH STEP

The compact radio display is clear and bright, showing both primary and secondary frequencies. A ‘Push Step’ knob allows the fastest change from 8.33 kHz to 25 kHz – so you can tune the radio quickly without compromising your look-out. The Dual Watch feature allows two frequencies to be monitored at the same time – it’s like having two radios in one.

HEADSETS

The Trig compact radio two place intercom is optimised for use with standard aviation headsets – a number of adjustments allow the radio to be used successfully in noisy aircraft.  The compact radio also has a built in speaker amplifier that can drive an external speaker, this is preferred by some glider pilots. If using a dynamic microphone with a Trig radio please note an amplified adaptor will be required.
